What is the endocannabinoid system?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biochemical communication system whose function is essential for the good psychic and physiological balance of our entire organism (homeostasis), and whose result has to do with moods. 

ECS was discovered in the 1990s as a result of research on the effects of cannabinoids in the human body. Despite being the most recently discovered functional system, everything indicates that it appeared very early in the evolution of vertebrates.

According to these studies, this system could be one of the most important when it comes to regulating our mood, which is a precursor to the feeling of well-being and happiness. Having a healthy endocannabinoid system can help us to have a more harmonized body and to cope with times of stress and difficulties in life.

We could define it as a very complex biological intercellular communication system, and therefore difficult for us to perceive, but vital for the optimal functioning of our entire body.

It regulates all the functions of our body and ensures that they are all harmonized, so that the result is optimal and translates into our well-being. It would be like a kind of self-regulating thermostat for our temperature, blood pressure, glucose levels, minerals, waste, water, ... The ECS is made up of three types of basic elements:


  1. Endocannabinoids, substances produced by our own body, similar to the active principle of hemp and cannabis, whose function is to activate cannabinoid receptors , some proteins of the cell membrane, so that these, in turn, transmit the information that arrives, loaded with "wellness". 
  2. Membrane cannabinoid receptors , specific to detect cannabinoids. There are two types of receptors: cannabinoid receptor 1 and cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB1 and CB2).
  3. Enzimas whose function is to synthesize and decompose to cannabinoids, thereby limiting the duration of action. In other words, they determine "the expiration time" for that well-being.
